چکیده

We study the effect of photoinhibition in a nonlocal reaction-diffusionadvection equation, which models the dynamics of a single phytoplankton species in a water column where the growth of the species depends solely on light. Our results show that, in contrast to the case of no photoinhibition, where at most one positive steady state can exist, the model with photoinhibition possesses at least two positive steady states in certain parameter ranges. Our approach involves bifurcation theory and perturbation-reduction arguments.

Effects of diurnal vertical mixing and stratification on phytoplankton productivity in geothermal Lake Rotowhero, New Zealand

Mixing processes in lakes are key factors controlling light availability for phytoplankton growth, but understanding the contribution of mixing is often confounded by other factors such as nutrient availability and species dynamics. Our study examined this problem in a low pH, geothermally heated lake dominated by one phytoplankton genus and lacking the complexity of nutrient limitation, phytop...

Modelling the effects of chromatic adaptation on phytoplankton community structure in the oligotrophic ocean

We explored the role of chromatic adaptation in shaping vertical phytoplankton community structures using a trait-based ecosystem model. The model included 1000 ‘phytoplankton types’ and was applied to the oligotrophic South Atlantic Gyre in a 1dimensional framework, where ‘phytoplankton types’ refers to the model phytoplankton that were stochastically assigned unique physiological characterist...

Dynamics of phytoplankton communities under photoinhibition.

We analyzed a model of phytoplankton competition for light in a well-mixed water column. The model, proposed by Gerla et al. (Oikos 120:519-527, 2011), assumed inhibition of photosynthesis at high irradiance (photoinhibition). We described the global behavior through mathematical analyses, providing a general solution to the multi-species competition for light with photoinhibition. We classifie...

Photosynthetic parameters of arctic marine phytoplankton: Vertical variations and time scales of adaptation

In the eastern Canadian arctic the photosynthesis-irradiance curves of phytoplankton from the 50% and 1% light levels differ mainly in their susceptibility to photoinhibition. The photoinhibition parameters of deep populations and the intensity of the deep chlorophyll maximum were correlated with N2, the bulk stratification parameter of the water column. Comparison of data from the same region ...
